This Juneteenth conversation brought together renowned activist, educator, and abolitionist Mariame Kaba and visual artist Sue Jeong Ka for an intimate gathering in response to Ka’s exhibition Explicit!!!, on view at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space from April 25 to June 21, 2025. Framed by the question, “Abolition begins with a broken sentence, what was erased, what lingers, and how do we keep time in its absence?”, the conversation explored how censorship operates as a mechanism of control within prisons, schools, language, and the public imaginary.
Ka and Kaba reflected on the structural relationship between obscenity laws, curriculum bans, and the broader erasure of marginalized voices. They traced connections between carceral systems and educational frameworks, considering how visibility, identity, and desire are shaped—and often suppressed—by state and institutional power. Through the lens of art, literature, and abolitionist praxis, they examined how we perceive what is lost and what remains.
